What Is Montessori?
Montessori is a philosophy with the fundamental tenant that a child learns best within a social environment which supports each individual's unique development.
The Prepared Environment
The distinguishing characteristic of Montessori schools is the total preparation of the classroom to the needs of the young, learning child. The environment is designed as a "developmental aid" in which materials, furnishings and activities are selected to offer the child an orderly yet stimulating setting for exploration and discovery.
There are five distinct areas in the classroom:
The prepared environment possesses a certain order, and disposes the children to develop at their own speed, according to their own capacities and above all, in a non-competitive atmosphere in their first school years. The children find purposeful learning through discovery and joy of learning at an early age.
